Les représentants de la Communauté juive de Turquie apportent leur soutien au président Erdoğan accusé d’antisémitisme par le Département d’État américain

Dans un communiqué officiel publié le 18 mai, le Département d’État américain a qualifié d' « antisémites » les propos récemment tenus par le président Recep Tayyip Erdoğan à l’encontre d’Israël. En réponse à Ned Prise, porte-parole du Département d’État américain, la Communauté juive de Turquie (Türk Yahudi Toplumu, TYT) qui comprend également la Fondation du Grand Rabbinat de Turquie (Türkiye Hahambaşılığı Vakfı), a déclaré sur Twitter qu’il était « injuste et répréhensible de laisser entendre que le président Erdoğan est antisémite » et a également salué l’approche jusqu’ici « constructive, solidaire et encourageante » du gouvernement turc envers la communauté juive.

Plusieurs personnalités d’opposition ont considéré cette déclaration de loyauté comme une nouvelle illustration de la mainmise du gouvernement turc sur les institutions représentant les communautés non musulmanes de Turquie. Le 24 avril dernier, la Communauté juive de Turquie (TYT) avait déjà fait part d’une convergence d’intérêt avec le gouvernement turc en soutenant l’appel de Recep Tayyip Erdoğan pour un « comité historique commun » sur la question arménienne.

Representatives of Turkey's Jewish community offer support to President Erdoğan accused of anti-Semitism by the US State Department

In an official statement issued on 18 May, the US State Department described President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's recent remarks against Israel as "anti-Semitic". In response to Ned Prise, spokesperson for the US State Department, the Jewish Community of Turkey (Türk Yahudi Toplumu, TYT), which also includes the Chief Rabbinate of Turkey Foundation (Türkiye Hahambaşılığı Vakfı), said on twitter that it was "unfair and reprehensible to imply that President Erdoğan is anti-Semitic," and also praised the Turkish government's "constructive, supportive, and encouraging" approach to the Jewish community so far.

Several opposition figures saw this declaration of loyalty as a further illustration of the Turkish government's takeover of institutions representing Turkey's non-Muslim communities. On April 24, the Jewish Community of Turkey (TYT) had already expressed a convergence of interest with the Turkish government by supporting Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's call for a "joint historical committee" on the Armenian issue.

L’église orthodoxe arménienne Surp Sarkis, située dans le district de Sur à Diyarbakır, est menacée de disparition faute d’entretien et de réparations. Cet édifice religieux historique bâti au XVIème siècle est également connu sous le nom d’église de Çeltik (Hızır İlyas). Depuis plusieurs années, Gafur Türkay, membre du Conseil d’administration de la Fondation arménienne (Ermeni Vakfı) à laquelle appartient l’église, milite pour la rénovation de l’édifice et dénonce les pillages réguliers du lieu.

In Diyarbakir, a 500-year-old Armenian church is on the verge of collapse

The Surp Sarkis Armenian Orthodox Church, located in the Sur district of Diyarbakır, is in danger of disappearing due to lack of maintenance and repairs. This historic religious building built in the 16th century is also known as Çeltik Church (Hızır İlyas). For several years, Gafur Türkay, a member of the board of the Armenian Foundation (Ermeni Vakfı) to which the church belongs, has been campaigning for the renovation of the building and denouncing the regular looting of the place.

Les révélations du mafieux Sedat Peker secouent la classe politique turque

Depuis le début du mois de mai, le mafieux Sedat Peker accuse de corruption plusieurs représentants de l’État turc dans de nombreuses vidéos diffusées sur YouTube. Exilé à Dubaï, cette figure du crime organisé met en cause Süleyman Söylu, ministre de l’Intérieur, ainsi que le fils de l’ancien Premier ministre Binali Yıldırım. Sedat Peker a également accusé des membres du gouvernement d’avoir pris part aux assassinats de journalistes dans les années 90 et notamment à celui du journaliste d’investigation du quotidien Cumhuriyet Uğur Mumcu, assassiné le 24 janvier 1993 par une attaque à la bombe alors qu’il effectuait des recherches sur le problème kurde et le PKK. Erol Önderoğlu, représentant de Reporters sans frontières (RSF) en Turquie et le syndicat des journalistes de Turquie ont conjointement demandé aux autorités une enquête sur les allégations de Sedat Peker concernant les meurtres des journalistes Uğur Mumcu et Kutlu Adalı.

Revelations by mafioso Sedat Peker shake up Turkish politicians

Since the beginning of May, the mafioso Sedat Peker has accused several Turkish state representatives of corruption in numerous videos posted on YouTube. Le Parlement européen adopte un rapport particulièrement incisif à l’encontre de la Turquie

Le dernier rapport sur la Turquie approuvé par les eurodéputés souligne un éloignement des autorités turques des valeurs européennes et une poursuite des atteintes contre l’État de droit. Plusieurs points relatifs au pluralisme culturel et religieux sont particulièrement importants puisque le Parlement européen :

• « Demande la mise en place urgente d’une législation complète en matière de lutte contre les discriminations.
• Déplore la transformation en mosquée de Saint-Sophie, qui nuit aux efforts de dialogue et de coopération entre les communautés religieuses, ainsi qu’au tissu social pluraliste et multiculturel de la Turquie.
• Invite l’Union et ses États membres à examiner la possibilité d’ajouter le mouvement raciste d’extrême droite ülkücü [connu sous le nom de « Loups gris »] à la liste de l’UE en matière de terrorisme.
• Invite les autorités turques à promouvoir des réformes positives et effectives dans le domaine de la liberté de conscience et de religion en permettant aux communautés religieuses d’obtenir une personnalité juridique, ainsi qu’en mettant en application les recommandations de la Commission de Venise sur le statut des communautés religieuses. »

The European Parliament adopts a particularly incisive report on Turkey

The latest report on Turkey approved by MEPs highlights the Turkish authorities' move away from European values and continued attacks on the rule of law. Several points relating to cultural and religious pluralism are particularly important as the European Parliament:

• "Calls for the urgent introduction of comprehensive anti-discrimination legislation.
• Deplores the conversion of St. Sophia's into a mosque, which undermines efforts at dialogue and cooperation between religious communities, as well as the pluralistic and multicultural social fabric of Turkey.
• Calls on the EU and its Member States to examine the possibility of adding the far-right racist movement ülkücü [known as "Grey Wolves"] to the EU list of terrorists.
• Calls on the Turkish authorities to promote positive and effective reforms in the field of freedom of conscience and religion by allowing religious communities to obtain legal personality, as well as by implementing the recommendations of the Venice Commission on the status of religious communities. "

Le philanthrope Osman Kavala, engagé dans la défense des minorités culturelles et la réconciliation arméno-turque, maintenu en détention après un nouveau jugement 

Le 21 mai s’est tenu un nouveau procès du mécène et homme d’affaires Osman Kavala, incarcéré depuis plus de trois ans sans avoir été condamné. Le philanthrope est jugé pour « tentative de renversement du gouvernement » en raison de son soutien aux manifestations de Gezi en 2013. En décembre 2019, la Cour européenne des droits de l’homme avait condamné la détention d’Osman Kavala en la jugeant comme une mesure visant à « intimider d’autres défenseurs des droits de l’homme ». Osman Kavala est une figure respectée de la société civile en Turquie qui s’est notamment impliquée dans des projets culturels portant sur les droits des minorités, sur la question kurde et la réconciliation arméno-turque.

Philanthropist Osman Kavala, committed to the defence of cultural minorities and Armenian-Turkish reconciliation, remains in detention after a new trial 

On 21 May, a new trial was held for philanthropist and businessman Osman Kavala, who has been in prison for more than three years without being convicted. The philanthropist is on trial for "attempting to overthrow the government" for his support of the Gezi protests in 2013. In December 2019, the European Court of Human Rights had condemned Osman Kavala's detention as a measure to "intimidate other human rights defenders". Osman Kavala is a respected civil society figure in Turkey who has been involved in cultural projects on minority rights, the Kurdish issue and Armenian-Turkish reconciliation.

Du 18 au 20 mai, les responsables politiques mis en cause et membres du Parti démocratique des peuples (HDP) ont été entendus dans le cadre d’une deuxième audience devant la 22ème Haute Cour pénale d’Ankara. Ce procès juge les responsables présumés des émeutes qui se sont produites en Turquie le 6 et 7 octobre 2014. Des peines de prison à vie sont requises pour 108 suspects, 28 personnes ont déjà été incarcérées, dont l’ancien coprésident du HDP Selahattin Demirtaş.

From 18 to 20 May, the accused politicians, and members of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) were heard in a second hearing before the 22nd High Criminal Court in Ankara. This trial is trying those allegedly responsible for the riots that took place in Turkey on 6 and 7 October 2014. Life sentences are sought for 108 suspects, 28 people have already been jailed, including former HDP’ co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş.

Ces organes de presse ont accusé Karel Valansi de protéger Israël et la journaliste a fait l’objet d’une campagne de harcèlement et de dénigrement en ligne accompagnée de nombreux messages à caractère antisémites. La Coalition pour les femmes dans le journalisme (CFWIJ) a publié un communiqué pour soutenir Karel Valansi et a condamné la rhétorique antisémite mobilisée par les médias progouvernementaux impliqués dans ces attaques.

The Coalition for Women in Journalism (CFWIJ) denounces racist attacks on columnist Karel Valansi

Turkish journalist of Jewish origin, Karel Valansi, has been the target of racist attacks by two pro-government media outlets [Takvim and Beyaz Gazete] in connection with the recent escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. These media outlets have accused Karel Valansi of protecting Israel and she has been subjected to an online harassment and smear campaign with numerous anti-Semitic messages. The Coalition for Women in Journalism (CFWIJ) issued a statement in support of Karel Valansi and condemned the antisemitic rhetoric mobilised by the pro-government media involved in these attacks.
